On September 11, 2001, there was a terrorist attack on the United States, with attacks in New York City and at the Pentagon in Virginia, as well as a fourth hijacked plane that crashed in Pennsylvania. That day was a very sad day for everyone. The firefighters climbed up the towers after they were hit in order to help the trapped people get out. There were large amounts of debris after the towers collapsed, covering much of lower Manhattan. Some of the firefighters did not survive. Still, many more firefighters, rescue workers, and other first responders continued to rush in to help.

They knew that people on floors above where the planes struck were still trapped inside. Many trapped on the higher floors faced impossible conditions, and some fell or jumped from the towers. Estimates suggest that roughly 200 people fell or jumped from the Twin Towers that day. The firefighters knew they could do little to help those falling from such heights and were watching helplessly from the ground.

Many people were considered heroes that day for their courageous efforts to help wounded victims get to safety. Although it was a sad day for our nation, it was also a day of unity, kindness, and one that showed the strength of Americans coming together to help one another.
