Wild: What you should know about Kettle Run’s first-ever literary art magazine
Hidden in room 241, a meeting takes place. A group of Kettle Run’s creatives, looking to share their passions. Art, photography, poetry… the students spend hours working to show off the beauty that the students of Kettle Run have to offer.
Kettle Run High School’s first edition of their student-led literary magazine, Wild, is in the works! After months of preparation, marketing, and campaigning for submissions, the magazine’s staff is now in the process of patchworking a magazine together using submissions from students, staff, and even Kettle Run alumni. Wild aims to create a safe environment for students to submit their art to be seen and published. It’s a great opportunity for artists — both literary and visual — looking to get their foot in the door!
“In Kettle Run’s Literary Arts magazine, we’re looking to celebrate creativity that extends beyond the art rooms,” says Mrs. Burke, Wild’s faculty advisor. The magazine is largely student-led, with the staff making most of the artistic and administrative decisions. Through the past couple of months, Mrs. Burke has watched the staff grow and learn to appreciate art on a deeper level. She admitted that “working with an excited and energetic staff and reconnecting with alumni to see how their work has evolved,” have been her favorite parts of the production of Wild.
For this first year of publication, Wild will be given out for free. Mackenzie Mauck, the Editor-in-Chief, explains that “for the first year, they’re gonna be free. It’s kind of to get people enticed and everything. We’re hoping that we can get people interested in the art we put out.”
Mack told me that she just wants people to take a chance on it. “Don’t just think because you’re not an art person that you’re not going to like it because we do have things for everybody at the end of the day. There’s something in there that everybody can enjoy and there’s a piece that everybody can relate to and feel seen with.”
While there isn’t a set date for when Wild is going to be published, the staff hopes to have it out by March, which is Youth Art Month. Make sure to stay updated on the progress of the magazine to see when you can get your hands on a copy and remember to stay WILD!
