Kansas City Chiefs Win Super Bowl LVII

Mandy Holmes, Managing Editor

On Sunday, February 12, the Kansas City Chiefs were crowned the Super Bowl 57 Champions. In an intense game, they beat the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35! It was held in Glendale, Arizona at State Farm Stadium. Despite the distance, both teams’ fans showed out. As always, the Super Bowl is the most highly anticipated game of the year. This year, it was almost a picture-perfect matchup; both teams had a 16-3 record and were the number one seeds of their respective divisions (AFC and NFC). Also, these two teams had yet to play each other this season. The Chiefs were favored to win but with both teams having such a similar stat line, it was really a toss-up between who wanted it more.

Super Bowl 57 was also historic in a couple of ways. It was the first time in NFL history that both teams’ starting quarterbacks are Black – Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs and Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles. Also of the Philadelphia Eagles, Autumn Lockwood was the first Black woman to coach in a super bowl game. This is significant because it gives young Black people role models to look up to and shows the growth of the NFL. Super Bowl 57 was also the first to feature two brothers playing against each other. That would be Travis and Jason Kelce, with Travis being on the winning team. Their mom, Donna Kelce, was one of the icons of the game.

This was a very intense game that went back and forth until the very end. Philadelphia came out strong, scoring within the first five minutes. The Chiefs retaliated, scoring their own touchdown. In the second quarter, the Eagles scored 2 more touchdowns and a field goal, while Kansas City only added another touchdown. At halftime, the score was 24-14. Following Rhiana’s halftime show, the third quarter consisted of just one Philadelphia field goal. In the fourth quarter, the Cheifs heated up and tacked on two more touchdowns and a field goal, while the Eagles added just one touchdown and field goal. This resulted in the Kansas City Chiefs winning 38-35.

Super Bowl 57 was very high-energy and just the type of game NFL fans want. It was entertaining for all fans. The elite offenses and defenses were incredible to watch. Overall, this season of NFL playoffs was awesome and I can’t wait to see more from these teams next year!
